The College honours the name of the Blessed Virgin Mary seen in apparition at Fatima, Portugal in 1917. The founder, Bishop Jerome Fernandez, an ardent devotee of the Heavenly Mother, wished that every member of the Fatima community enjoy her maternal protection and care. Fatima Mata National College was founded in 1951 by His Excellency Rt. Rev. Dr. Jerome M. Fernandez, the first native Bishop of Quilon, with a view to providing facilities for higher education in the diocese. His patriotic spirit also envisioned every Fatimite imbued with a genuine sense of service and sacrifice for the nation. Hence the name Fatima Mata National College. Fatima was elevated to the status of a first grade college with the introduction of degree courses in Commerce, Economics and Zoology.
