Alpha Epsilon Delta of SMU or Southern Methodist University is a national society for students preparing for careers in medicine, dentistry, osteopathic medicine, optometry, podiatry, veterinary medicine, and other allied health professions.

It was founded at the University of Alabama in 1926. There are over 124,000 members in 174 chapters at colleges and universities throughout the United States.

Its function is to encourage and recognize academic excellence among all preprofessional health students; endorse opportunities for intellectual and professional development; encourage communication between various health professionals, preprofessional health students and educators; supply a vehicle for students with similar interests to achieve common goals; use assets to advantage members, health organizations, charities, the community, and others; promote appreciation of preprofessional health education; and to offer a program of service to benefit the college/university community.

It is a member of the Association of College Honor Societies and an affiliated society of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Requirements for Active Membership

Premedical students are eligible for active membership in the chapter after one has completed the following requirements as mandated by Constitution:

1. One is engaged in courses leading to the study of medicine or other healthcare professions.
2. One has completed at least 3 semesters of premedical work with an overall GPA of at least 3.32 and a GPA of at least 3.2 in the sciences. For transfer students, the GPA used to determine scholastic eligibility at the new school is determined by averaging all grades from both the old and new schools (and all science grades from both schools).
3. Character, general ability, and personality is considered carefully in the selection of every member.

One who is accepted for membership is notified by letter. Upon acceptance, there is a one-time membership fee of $55 payable before initiation.

Members are elected without any discrimination on the basis of race, sex, religion, creed, or national origin.

Associate Membership
One pursuing premedical curricula who has not yet met the requirements listed above for active membership can attend activities and events of the Chapter as associate members.
