Sant Gadge Baba Amravati University was established on 1st May 1983 to cater to mostly the educational needs of rural population of western Vidarbha. The University has been re-accredited (3rd Cycle) by NAAC in 2016 with "A" grade (CGPA 3.07).

Amravati University is recognized under Section 12(B) of University Grants Commission (UGC) Act of the Ministry of Education, Government of India. It received NAAC accreditation in 2002. It is an associate member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities, London.

127 colleges are affiliated with Amravati University, with an enrolment of over 90,000 students for the Undergraduate and Graduate courses in different faculties.
