The Child and Family Life team at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital is made up of trained professionals with expertise in helping reduce the stress.

Activity Center
Activity centers are located on the 12th, 11th, and 7th floors of our inpatient units,

The Activity Center offers numerous arts and crafts, make believe items, medical play tools, board games, toys, and video games for all ages.

The teen activity center is open to all patients ages 13 to 20 and is located on the 7th floor.

Art Therapy
Art therapy can help patients and families:
Cope with the hospital experience
Focus thoughts away from pain and discomfort
Enhance self-esteem and worth through creating
Build connections with staff and family
Express themselves and enjoy the creative process
Utilize time in a meaningful and purposeful way
Provide a creative outlet for caregivers to recharge
Relieve fear and anxiety
Establish a sense of control of their environment
Have fun!

Procedural preparation
Collaboration with patient, family, and providers to establish coping techniques
Distraction/coping support before, during, and after procedure
Preparation books/pictures and medical equipment
Rehearsal of procedure utilizing coping strategy/tools

Medical play
Identify misconceptions
Allows expression of feelings
Promote mastery to help the child regain his or her sense of control
