The English and Foreign Languages University, Hyderabad, was founded in 1958 as the Central Institute of English (CIE) to impart quality training in English for teachers, the mandate of the University is to advance and disseminate. It is one of the first institutions in the country to start distance mode education.

In 2006 CIEFL was given central university status and accordingly came to be called the English and Foreign Languages University by an act of the Parliament

Today, it has 7 schools and 26 Departments. Apart from graduate, postgraduate, and Research programmes, it offers postgraduate diplomas, and distance and part time mode courses.


The School of Distance Education has three departments:

English Language Teaching

Linguistics and Phonetics

Literatures in English

Eligibility: Graduation with English as a subject
Duration: 2-4 yrs

Post-Graduate Certificate in the Teaching of English (PGCTE)
Eligibility: a)MA (English)
OR
b)MA in an allied subject
OR
c)MA with at least a second class along with 5 years’ experience of teaching “Methods of Teaching of English” at M Ed/B Ed Levels
Duration: 1-2 years

3.
Post-Graduate Diploma in the Teaching in English (PGDTE)
Eligibility: PGCTE
Duration: 1-2 years
