the he GMAT introduced the Integrated Reasoning (IR) section on June 5, 2012. All GMATs administered since that date have had an IR section.


Importance of the IPR Section

In the months leading up to that date, thousands of GMAT test-takers accelerated their plans, taking the GMAT early to avoid the IR section. This produced a glut of pre-IR GMATs

As the MBA programs always have qualified applicants looking to get in. However, there are not always enough seats for all of the applicants. Those who can score a high enough IR score can set themselves apart from the others.

For folks who already excel at math, who studied something mathy in undergrad, who are in the upper percentiles of the Quant sections, the IR appears somewhat less predictive. In other words, we generally expect these folks to do well in the IR also

As An Example Imagine this scenario: Two qualified applicants remain for the final seat at Stanford MBA. Which one would you choose?

Candidate 1: Q48 / IR 8
Candidate 2: Q50 / IR 4

Based on these statistics alone, Candidate 1 can potentially appear to be more well-rounded than Candidate 2. There is too much discrepancy between Candidate 2’s overall GMAT score and his IR score.
