Full Time MBA Electives B6084 Global Risk Analysis Pre-requisite: B8024 Economics and Markets This course looks at the identification, assessment and management of global risk from the viewpoint of potential investors and MNCs. The areas covered include political risk, economic risk, commercial risk and reputation risk. The course is case study based and participants are expected to complete a group project. B6090 Chinese Classics: Applications to Business & Marketing Practices With the increasing importance of China as an economic superpower, more and more multinational corporations are interested to understand the mindset of the Chinese strategist and on how to conduct business with China. With the entry of China into the WTO, the need to understand China becomes even more important and urgent. While learning from the west, more and more Chinese scholars and analysts have begun to study their own ancient classics. The reason to see how these classics can be related to modern business practices. China is a civilization that has survived more than 5,000 years, much longer than the Catholic Church! Thus, there are bound to be immense wisdom embedded in many of its ancient classics. This course will focus on some of these well-known Chinese classics such as the 36 Stratagems of the Chinese, the Principles of Tao Zhu-gong, and Annals of the Three Kingdoms. In particular, the course seeks to broaden students creative and analytical thinking skills in relating Chinese philosophical concepts and thinking to modern day business and marketing practices. B6095 Internship (For Full-time participants only) Internships fulfill an important component of both academic and practical education. The integration of professional experience into the learning process is highly effective in developing MBAs understanding of business in action, as they are able to observe and perceive the relevance and application of theory to practice. The internship is an integral part of the MBA educational experience. In a workplace setting, our MBAs are exposed to the reality of the businesses in all its dimensions, the application and development of knowledge and skills to the job including ethical responses to situations which arise as well as issues of professional responsibility. This is an attachment at business organizations for full-time MBA participants. The objectives are to provide them with the opportunities to apply the knowledge learnt in the programme to practice, to explore a new industry or a new career, and to develop professionally and intellectually. The participant must work a minimum of 200 hours over one trimester, and approval must be obtained from the MBA Careers Director prior to commencing the internship. At the conclusion of the internship, the participant is required to submit a detailed written report to the MBA Careers Director. The report should include the internship experience, the relevancy of the MBA courses to the internship experience, and an appraisal of how the internship contributed to the participant’s career goals. This course cannot be taken to fulfill the programme requirements of 47 AUs required for graduation. It will only be available as an elective to full time participants. Both the MBA Career Development Office and/or MBA participant will take ownership in the sourcing of company for the internship. B6096 Managerial Decision Making This course will be organised around the theme Decision Making Traps That Many Managers Fall Prey To and What You Can Do To Avoid Them. It will provide a broad overview of managerial decision-making from both a descriptive perspective (How do managers make decisions?), as well as, a prescriptive perspective (How should managers make decisions to obtain better outcomes?). The instructor would demonstrate many decision making slippages in class using exercises, tasks, and surveys, and discuss various business contexts in which such slippages occur. The basic principles learned in class would have applications across a wide range of business decision making contexts, including making financial decisions, investment decisions, managing employees, planning mergers, selling products, and negotiating with others. |
