The Department of Physics is one of the oldest departments of the National Institute of Technology, Durgapur which has been providing the basic knowledge of physics to innumerable budding engineers who have studied in this institute.

The interest area of the department spreads over many interdisciplinary areas of science and the boundaries are not rigidly defined.

The department currently offers two independent postgraduate programmes and also provides useful support in teaching physics to all engineering undergraduate students of this institute.

In addition Ph.D. program in various disciplines of physics and allied subjects is offered by this department.
