Homi J. Bhabha was plays an important role in the development of the Indian atomic energy program in 1944. In 1957 the first digital computer of India was built in TIFR.

TIFR got the status of deemed university in 2002.
TIFR has includes institutes outside its main campus in Colaba and Mumbai.
