The Diploma in Blood Bank Technology (DBBT) course is started to overcome the shortage of qualified Blood Bank Technicians in the Government and private hospitals of the State of Kerala.

Duration -
The duration of the course shall be 2 years

Total number of seats.
Not to exceed 10-15 students per batch

Eligibility of admission-

Higher Secondary Examination of the Board of Higher Secondary Education of Kerala or equivalent examinations conducted by any board in India recognized by any of Universities in Kerala with Physics, Chemistry and Biology as optional subjects and a minimum of 50% marks of these subjects put together.

Age limit:

The Candidate should be in the age group of 17-25 years. 5 years relaxation in the upper age limit for SC/ ST candidates is allowable.

Nativity: Indian citizen of Kerala origin is eligible for admission.

Admission requirements

Selection to the course shall be made by the Director of Medical Education. Selection will be made on merit basis and based on the marks obtained in the qualifying examination.

Paper I BASIC SCIENCE IN TRANFUSION MEDICINE

1. Basics in Immunohaematology
2. Major and Minor Blood grouping system
3. Donor selection, Blood collection, donor care, Blood bags, Anticoagulants and storage of blood
4. Special Investigations in connection with Blood grouping.
5. Compatibility Testing and Transfusion practices in special situation.
6. Coombs test
7. Selection of blood products in clinical practice
8. Adverse effects of blood transfusion and investigation of transfusion reaction.
9. HLA and its importance.

Paper II RECENT CONCEPTS IN IMMUNO HAEMATOLOGY

1. Cellular Components preparation, storage and use
2. Plasma components Preparation, storage and use.
3. Screening of Blood for Transfusion transmitted infection
4. Neonatal transfusion, Haemolytic disease of New born and other haemolytic anaemeas including Autoimmune haemolytic anaemia
5. Autologous blood collection and transfusion.
6. Quality control in Blood Banking
7. Documentation
8. Safety procedures in lab
9. Recent advances in Transfusion Medicine.
