Having identified petrochemicals as a prime driver of future growth in business, IndianOil began with low-investment, high-value projects such as Methyl Tertiary Butyl Ether (MTBE) and Butene-1 at its Koyali Refinery, Vadodara.

Thereafter, it set up a world-scale Linear Alkyl Benzene (LAB) plant at Gujarat Refinery in 2004 and an integrated Paraxylene/Purified Terephthalic Acid (PX/PTA) plant at Panipat in 2006. A Naphtha Cracker complex with downstream polymer units also came up at Panipat in 2010.

In order to enter the petrochemicals market effectively, a separate Strategic Business Unit (SBU) is created in IndianOil for marketing of petrochemicals.

This SBU has five exclusive sub-groups, classified product wise (LAB, PTA, Polymers) and function wise (Logistics & Exports), in addition to regional/field set-ups to offer reliable customer service.

The Corporation offers a full slate of petrochemical products and intermediates under the brand name PROPEL.
