The GRE (Graduate Record Examinations) conducted by Educational Testing Service (ETS) offers the General Test in two formats computer-based and paper-based. The computer-based test lasts about three hours and 45 minutes overall, and consists of six sections. The GRE General Test measures verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, critical thinking and analytical writing skills skills that have been developed over a long period of time and are not related to a specific field of study but are important for all. GRE Paper Pattern The three sections of the GRE Test pattern are discussed below: GRE Test Pattern - Verbal Reasoning The Verbal Reasoning section of the GRE Test Pattern tests three areas: Analyse and evaluate content information Assess ones ability to analyse relationships between different parts of sentences Distinguish between concepts and words and their relationships GRE Test Pattern - Quantitative Reasoning It measures ability to understand quantitative information and apply mathematical skills and elementary mathematical concepts of arithmetic, algebra, geometry and data interpretation. The Quantitative Reasoning section of the GRE Test contains four types of questions: a. Quantitative Comparison Questions b. Multiple-choice Questions- Select One Answer Choice c. Multiple-choice Questions- Select One or More Answer Choices d. Numeric Entry Questions GRE Test Pattern- Analytical Writing The Analytical Writing section measures ability to: Articulate complex ideas clearly and effectively Provide relevant reasons and instances to support their views on specific ideas Analyse claims and information provided Coherently, effectively and logically discuss a topic in English According to the GRE test pattern, the Analytical Writing section consists of 2 separately timed analytical writing tasks: a. Analyse an Issue task: This task assesses ability to think critically about a topic and express thoughts in writing. b. Analyse an Argument task: This task assesses ability to understand, analyse and evaluate arguments and convey evaluation in writing. |
