The Department of Mechanical Engineering of Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore offers a richly integrated curriculum of education and research to its students.

The Department offers Masters (M.E. and M.Sc(Engg.)) and Ph. D. programmes.

Students have a variety of opportunities to investigate a broad range of research in about a dozen thrust areas.

Research Programs

Ph.D.

The Ph.D. program in the department is meant for students with a M.E. / M.Tech degree.

Average Duration
The average duration of the Ph.D. program is four and half years.

Eligibility-
Masters Degree in Engineering or equivalent.

Admission is based on an interview.

Financial Aid-
Students get monthly scholarship of Rs.18,000 to Rs.20,000 (likely to be increased).

Direct Ph.D.

The direct Ph.D. program is for students with a B.E./B.Tech degree or equivalent, who have a very good academic record and have decided to do their Ph.D. at an early stage.

Average Duration-
The average duration of the direct Ph.D. program is expected to be 5 years.

Admission-
Admission is open to students holding a B.E./B.Tech or equivalent degree.
Admission is based on GATE plus an interview.

Financial Aid
Students get monthly scholarship of Rs.16,000 to Rs.18,000 (likely to be increased).

M.Sc. (Engg.)

Average Duration
The average duration of the M.Sc. (Engg.) program is expected to be 2 years.

Admission to the M.Sc. (Engg.)program is open to students holding a B.E./B.Tech or equivalent degree.
Admission is based on GATE plus an interview.

Financial Aid
Students get monthly scholarship of Rs.8,000/-

M.E. Program

The M.E. program in the department is a mainly course based Masters.

The program duration is 2 years.

Admission

Students with a Bachelors Degree in Engineering or Technology are admitted to the course through the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE).

Financial Aid
All students registered for the M. E. programme get a financial assistance of Rs. 8,000/- per month.
