The Department of Aerospace Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IITM) was established in 1969.

Bachelor of Technology
( 4 Year Course )

Eligibility-

A complete first-degree programme in Aerospace Engineering

Admission through Joint Entrance Examination(JEE).

Imparts fundamentals essential for a career involving design, analysis, construction, testing and operation of airplanes, helicopters, rockets and spacecraft

Involves courses in Basic Sciences, Basic Engineering and Humanities

Also involves courses in a Minor stream chosen from a wide variety ranging from Physics for Modern Technology to Financial Managemen.t

Flexibility in terms of professional electives, free electives, self-study courses and pass/fail courses.

An optional individual engineering project in the final year

Master of Science
( Minimum 1.5 Year )

Eligibility-

A research-based post-graduate programme.

Minimum duration: 1.5 years (usually 2-3 years).

Admission through GATE and test/interview for regular candidates and test/interview for sponsored candidates (more details).

Open for candidates with a Bachelors degree in Aerospace/Civil/Chemical/Computer Science/Electrical/Mechanical/Metallurgical/Naval Architecture OR Masters degree in Physics/Mathematics/Chemistry.

Also open for candidates with degree in other branches of engineering if they have three years experience in an Aerospace industry/organization.

Possibility of conversion to Ph.D. subject to good performance.

Master of Technology
( 2 Year Course)

Eligibility-

A self-contained post-graduate programme in Aerospace Engineering.

Open to graduates in Aerospace Engg. as well as related disciplines.

Admission through GATE for regular candidates, test/interview for sponsored/QIP candidates.

Imparts training necessary for a career involving design, analysis, construction, testing and operation of airplanes, helicopters, rockets and spacecraft.

Ample flexibility in terms of professional electives (Complete curriculum).

An individual engineering project in the second year.

Possibility of conversion to Ph.D. subject to good performance.

Fellowship for regular candidates.

Dual Degree
( 5 Year Integrated B.Tech & M.Tech )

Eligibility-

An integrated programme in Aerospace Engineering.

Admission through JEE.

Imparts fundamentals as well as advanced training necessary for a career involving design, analysis, construction, testing and operation of airplanes, helicopters, rockets and spacecraft.

Involves courses in Basic Sciences, Basic Engineering and Humanities in addition.

Also involves courses in a Minor stream chosen from a wide variety ranging from Physics for Modern Technology to Financial Management.

M.Tech. level courses starting from the seventh semester.

Flexibility in terms of professional electives, free electives, self-study courses and pass/fail courses.

A 14 month long engineering project after the eighth semester.

Fellowship during the final year (subject to certain conditions).

Doctor of Philosophy
( Minimum 2 Year )

Eligibility-

A full-fledged research programme.

Minimum duration: 2 years (usually 3-5 years).

Admission through test/interview (more details).

Open for candidates with a Masters degree in Aerospace/Civil/Applied Mechanics/Mechanical/Electrical Engg. or Masters degree in Mathematics/Physics.

Also open for candidates with a Masters degree in other branches of engineering if they have a basic degree in Aerospace Engg. or five years experience in an Aerospace industry/organization.
