You need to open a demat account if you want to buy or sell stocks. In this account the money is replaced by the shares.

For opening the demat account You have to approach the DPs of the bank branches to open your account.

Demat account reduces brokerage charges, make settlement of physical shares easier, enables quick ownership of securities which results in increased liquidity.

It also avoids confusion in the ownership title of securities, and provides easy receipt of public issue allotments.
