Default Re: Life In Indian Administrative Services

the Indian Administrative Services is considered to be one of the two premier civil services of India, because a candidate, once appointed to the IAS, is rendered ineligible to reappear in the Civil Services Examination. IAS officers serve in strategic and key positions in the Union Government, States governments and public-sector undertakings.

Job Profile
Direct recruit IAS officers are allocated to the state cadres, or Joint State cadres on the basis of their rank preference and availability of vacancy in their category-at their turn in terms of provisions of Cadre Allocation Policy of 2008 as amended from time to time. Officers recruited through other modes mentioned above remain on their state cadre.

Functions

(i) Collection of revenue and function as Courts in revenue matters;
(ii) Maintenance of law and order;
(iii) Function as Executive Magistrate;
(iv) Function as Chief Development Officer (CDO)/District Development Commissioner;
(v) Supervision of implementation of policies of State Government and Central Government;
(vi) To travel to places to oversee implementation of policies;
(vii) Supervision of expenditure of public funds as per norms of financial propriety;
(viii) In the process of policy formulation and decision making, IAS officers at various levels like Joint Secretary, Deputy Secretary etc. make their contributions and the give final shape to policies;
(ix) To handle the daily affairs of the government, including framing and implementation of policy in consultation with the minister-in-charge of the concerned Ministry;

PERKS-
i) An IAS is often given a superb accommodation, usually a big Bungalow with its own Security guards, Gardeners, Servants and Cooks. All of these are given to him for a very low rent.
ii) He gets government cars, usually with Red lights.
iii) He also gets the facilities of free electricity and telephone bills.
iv) During official travels for duty they get the accommodation in very good Government Bungalows and Rest houses.
v) Power and prestige is the greatest perks for an IAS.
vi) The security of the job is much more than that of a lucrative private sector job. In fact, it is very, very tough even for a chief minister to terminate an IAS officer s job. They have their legal safe guards against that.
vii) They can apply for a study leave for 2 to 4 years in a reputed foreign university, the cost of which will be paid by the government.
viii) They shall get life time pensions and other retirement benefits.
There are many more about these facilities and perks. It is impossible for a big private sector employee to get such.
Moreover, an IAS is behind the formation and implementation of the policies of the Central and the various State Governments. You can work for the good of the people and this is the greatest perk among all
