The syllabus will help you to purchase books and know the paper questions.

UPPSC’s Combined State/Upper Subordinate Services Examination Pre Syllabus
PAPER – I: General Studies-I (200 marks, Duration: Two hours)

Current events of national and international importance

On Current Events of National and International importance, candidates will be expected to have knowledge about them. As per the trend of asking questions in UPPCS Prelims Exam, the candidates must be aware of the developments of current Central government and Uttar Pradesh state government. Apart from these, the past 2-3 month’s events such as important dates, awards, books& authors, sports are also crucial for this exam and the candidates will have to be updated of these events. Special Emphasis should be given to the specific details of the events such as date, place, name and the likes.

History of India and Indian National Movement: In History emphasis should be on broad understanding of social, economic and political aspects of Indian history.

(i) Ancient India: The candidates are expected to have proper understanding of various civilisations and the periodical divisions of Ancient Indian history and its chronological developments in India. Division of Indian society and its implications on the ordinary people of India.

(ii) Medieval India: Under the topic Medieval India, the candidates will have to study tri-partite struggle to till the Establishment of British East India Company in India. This topic covers the Delhi Sultanate period and Mughal period which also include various prominent architectural cultural developments in India.

(iii)Indian Religious Movements.: The religious movements like Bhakti and Sufi movements which gave birth to new sects in India apart from the existing religious tradition of Hinduism and Islam and how these sects affected severely the Indian society as a whole. The candidates must have knowledge of the teachings and philosophy of pioneers of such movements in India.

(iv)Modern India: Under this topic, the candidates must have knowledge of declining of Mughal Empire and the rise of European Powers in India. As per the trend of asking question in UPPCS Prelims, it is very important for the candidates to study the various Land reforms adopted during the colonial rule in India.

(v) Indian National Movement: In the Indian National Movement, the candidates are expected to have synoptic view of nature and character of the freedom movement, growth of nationalism and attainment of Independence. The role of prominent personalities during the war of Independence in 1857 is also important to cover during the study.

Indian and World geography - Physical, Social, Economic geography of India and the World.

(i) World Geography: In World Geography only general understanding of the subject will be expected. It very important for the candidates to cover the topic of world’s largest, highest, tallest, deepest monuments, rivers, waterfall, oceans and other physical features of the world.

(ii) Indian Geography: As far as the Indian Geography is concerned the candidates must possess the understanding of Indian climates, rivers, mountains, soils and plains which lie within the territory of India. Questions on the Geography of India will relate to Physical, Social & Economic Geography of India.

Indian Polity and governance - Constitution, Political System, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy, Rights issues etc.

(i) In Indian Polity questions will test knowledge of country’s political system including Panchayati Raj and Community Development, broad features of Indian Political system in India.

(ii) The questions will also include the topics such as the distribution of powers between the centre and states, role of executive, role of Judiciary and how it defines the jurisdiction of Supreme Court and High Courts, appointment and terms of the Governor of a state in India.

Economic and Social Development - Sustainable Development Poverty Inclusion, Demographics, Social Sector Initiatives, etc.

(i) The candidates will also be tested with respect to problems and relationship between Population, Environment and Urbanization.

(ii) The candidates must be aware of the current economic policies of Central government and as well as of the state government.

(iii)This topic also comprises of different aggregates of the Indian economy and the State of Uttar Pradesh.

General Issues on Environmental ecology, Bio-diversity and Climate Change- that do not require subject specialization.

General Science
Questions on General Science will cover general appreciation and understanding of Science including matters of every day observation and experience, as may be expected of a well educated person, who has not made a special study of any scientific discipline.

PAPER- II: General Studies-II (200 marks, Duration: Two hours)
(i) Comprehension

(ii) Interpersonal skills including communication skills

(iii) Logical reasoning and analytical ability

(iv) Decision making and problem solving

(v) General mental ability

(vi) Elementary Mathematics up to Class X level- Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry and Statistics

(1) Arithmetic:- (i) Number systems: Natural Numbers, Integers, Rational and irrational numbers, Real numbers, Divisors of an Integer, prime integers, L.C.M. and H.C.F. of integers and their inter-relationship. (ii) Average (iii) Ratio and proportion (iv) Percentage (v) Profit and Loss (vi) Simple and Compound interests (vii) Work and Time. (viii) Speed, Time and Distance

(2) Algebra:- (i) Factors of polynomials, L.C.M. and H.C.F. of polynomials and their interrelationship, Remainder theorem, simultaneous linear equations, quadratic equations.(ii) Set Theory: Set null set, subsets and proper subsets of a set, operations (Union, Intersections, difference, symmetric difference) between sets, Venn diagram.

(3) Geometry :-(i) Constructions and theorems regarding triangle, rectangle, square, trapezium and circles, their perimeter and area. (ii) Volume and surface area of sphere, right circular cylinder, right circular Cone and Cube.

(4) Statistics: Collection of data, Classification of data, frequency, frequency distribution, tabulation, cumulative frequency. Representation of data - Bar diagram, Pie chart, histogram, frequency polygon, cumulative frequency curves (ogives), Measures of Central tendency: Arithmetic mean, Median and Mode.

General English up to Class X level

(i) Comprehension.

(ii) Active Voice and Passive Voice.

(iii) Parts of Speech.

(iv) Transformation of Sentences.

(v) Direct and Indirect Speech.

(vi) Punctuation and Spellings.

(vii) Words Meanings.

(viii) Vocabulary & usage.

(ix) Idioms and Phrases.

(x) Fill in the Blanks
