Biomaterials - Overview, Classification of biomaterials, Interfacial Phenomena and tissue response to biomaterials, Metals and alloys for orthopedic implants-Stainless steel, Cobalt chromium alloy, Titanium and its alloys, Precious metal alloys, Other metal alloys. Dental implants - Endosseous Tooth Implants, materials, types and designs. UNIT 2 POLYMERS AND APPLICATIONS 9 Hrs. Polymers in biomedical use, , biodegradable polymers, microorganisms in polymeric implants, Polymer Sterilization, Deterioration of polymers, Polyethylene, Poly Vinyl Chloride, Hydrogels, silicone rubber. UNIT 3 BIOCERAMICS AND COMPOSITES 9 Hrs. Bioceramics, types - bioactive resorbable, non - resorbable, bioceramic coatings on metallic implants and bone bonding reactions on implantation. Hydroxyapatite - properties and applications. Composites - Types and Applications, Bioglass. UNIT 4 REPLACEMENT AND FIXATION DEVICES 9 Hrs. Bioelectric effect, Wolff’s Law, Types of orthopedic fixation devices-pins, screws and plates, Intra Medullary and spinal nails. Interface Problems with artificial joints and various fixation methods, hard tissue replacements - total hip and knee joint replacements. Soft Tissue replacements- Sutures -Tapes, Staples, Adhesives. Maxillofacial Implants. UNIT 5 OPTHALMOLOGY 9 Hrs Ophthalmology- Introduction, Contact lenses, Eye shields, Viscoelastic solutions, Vitreous implants, Acrylate adhesives, Scleral buckling materials for retinal detachment, artificial tears. Corrosion, Biocompatibility and Hemocompatibility, Biological Tests. Material surface characterization, 3D characterization. Max. 45 Hrs. COURSE OUTCOMES On completion of the course, student will be able to CO1 - Identify different types of biomaterials used for various applications. CO2 - Understand the hard tissue replacement and soft tissue replacement for various fixations. CO3 - Recognize various polymers, ceramics and composite used as biomaterials for organ replacement. CO4 - Acquire knowledge about how to rectify eye defect using various biomaterials. CO5 - Apply suitable methods to test Biocompatibility and Hemocompatibility of biomaterials.
