Advanced Eye Centre was inaugurated in 2006. Since the year 1962, the department of Ophthalmology is engaged in providing ophthalmic care of the highest order not only to the people of Chandigarh and surrounding area but also to the states of Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir and the western Uttar Pradesh.

Major areas of thrust are training of residents, research and patient care. It runs several special clinics and services viz. Lens, Cornea, Uvea, Glaucoma, Retina and Vitreous, Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus, Contact Lens & Low Vision Aids, Oculoplastic and Tumour Clinics. For the first time in India, laser treatment of retinal diseases and glaucoma was started in July, 1989.
