| shikha | Re: Central Plantation Crops Research Institute Regional Station Vital Regional Station at Vittal Central Plantation Crops Research Institute, Regional Station at Vittal came in to existence in 1970, with a mandate to carry out research on arecanut and cocoa. The efforts on this direction started as early as 1947 Location: This Station lies in the heart of the major areca growing areas of the country. Vittal is located in Bantwal taluk of Dakshina Kannada district, 48 kms away from Mangalore on the Mangalore-Vittal-Puttur road.Geographically it is situated at 12 15 N latitude and 750 25 E longitudes with an altitude of 73-92 m above MSL. Soil: Soil is mainly laterite admixed with sand and alluvium. Area: The research station has a farm area of 68.34 ha. Mandate: To develop appropriate production, protection and processing technologies for arecanut and cocoa. Production of parental lines and Breeders stock in arecanut and cocoa. To develop arecanut based farming systems. Transfer of technologies to developmental agencies and farmers.
