Minimally Invasive Surgery Training Centre, Department of Surgical Disciplines, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, India is a state of the art and the first training facility set up in India for training in laparoscopic surgery.

It provides courses in Operative Laparoscopy, Laparoscopic Suturing Skills, Laparoscopic Colorectal Surgery and Laparoscopic Hernia Surgery. It provides a world-class environment for acquisition of laparoscopic skills.

An intensive 3 day (Monday – Wednesday) course designed for the surgeon who has an interest in colorectal surgery, has significant experience of laparoscopic cholecystectomy, and is at the point of undertaking advanced laparoscopic surgery under supervision.

Course Content:
• - Laparoscopic approach to the right colon, sigmoid and rectum
• - Hands on training on porcine tissue
• - Laparoscopic suturing practice on porcine tissue
• - Hands on anatomical, ergonomic and practical skills sessions
• - Video teaching sessions
• - Close to reality application of instruments and use of normal laparoscopic equipment
• - Analysis of complications
• - Use of newer energy sources
• - Advice on getting started
• - Operation theatre visit depending on availability of clinical cases
• - Staplers and the Surgeon
• - Future developments
• - Trials of laparoscopic colorectal surgery
• - Expert discussion

Learning Outcomes:
• At the end of the course each trainee should be able to:
• - Explain the pros and cons of laparoscopic colorectal surgery
• - Debate the place of laparoscopic colorectal surgery for cancer
• - Describe the indications, methods of patient selection, patient information, risks and complications related to laparoscopic colorectal surgery
• - Know about anatomical considerations related to laparoscopic colectomy
• - Positioning of trocars and instruments.
• - Safe laparoscopic dissection techniques
• - Demonstrate certain key skills related to lap colorectal surgery:
• - Safe deployment of a laparoscopic stapling device
• - Know about the techniques for obtaining vascular control.
• - Explain the risks of using various energy sources
