People spend $100,000 (or more!) to earn the degree, confident that it will propel their career into overdrive. Even so, the once-golden MBA is quickly losing its luster. The degree has been WAY over-hyped, MBA curricula are out of touch with real-world demands, and many programs have a culture that fosters some awful management habits. If you got into a top-ten business school, go. You will earn $150,000 when you get out But If you did not get into a top ten school, then you're making a mistake if you attend. Really. However, theres so much more to a career than a persons educational background, and there are plenty of legitimate reasons to choose not to pursue an MBA, or to at least postpone it until the time is right. 1. You wont make more money In reality, the typical MBA graduate can expect a salary of about $76,000 (with 5-9 years of professional experience). However, recent MBA graduates with minimal professional experience will earn more much less. 2. The value of an MBA depends greatly upon the rank of the school. 3. The debt puts you risk averse at a time you should be trying things out. 4. Earning an MBA is a time suck. 5. An MBA may not be relevant to the job you truly want. 6. The value of an MBA doesnt last forever. 7. You don't need it for a career pivot. 8. Hiring managers may perceive you as overqualified. 9. You dont need an MBA to build a solid professional network. 10. The degree has become diluted. |
