Communication, Networks, Protocols and Standards, Standards Organizations. Line Configuration, Topology, Transmission
Modes, Categories of Networks Internet works.
Study of OSI and TCP/IP protocol suit: The Model, Functions of the layers, TCP/IP Protocol Suites.

UNIT 2 PHYSICAL LAYER 9 Hrs.
Physical Layer: Types of transmission media: Guided Media, Unguided Media, Transmission Impairments, Performance
Wavelength, Shannon Capacity, Media Comparison.
Data Link Layer: Design Issues, Error Detection and Correction - Types of Errors, Detection, Parity Check, Vertical
Redundancy Check, Longitudinal Redundancy Check, Cyclic Redundancy Check, Checksum, Error Correction.

UNIT 3 DATA LINK LAYER 9 Hrs.
Data Link Protocols: Bit Oriented Protocols-HDLC, LAN-IEEE 802, Ethernet, Switching- Circuit switching, Packet
Switching, Message Switching, and ISDN.
The Network Layer: Introduction to networks and devices - Repeaters, Hub, Bridges , Switches, Routers, Gateways,
Network Layer Design Issues, Routing Algorithms, Distance Vector Routing , Link State Routing.

UNIT 4 TRANSPORT LAYER 9 Hrs.
Introduction to transport layer, Elements of transport protocol, Performance Issues, User Datagram Protocol (UDP) –
Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) , Services, Features, Flow control, Error control, Congestion Control Algorithms,
Congestion avoidance, Quality of Service, Application Requirements.

UNIT 5 APPLICATION LAYER 9 Hrs.
Domain Name Space (DNS), Telnet, FTP, simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP), Simple Network Management Protocol
(SNMP), Hypertext Transfer protocol (HTTP), World Wide Web (WWW).
Social Issues, SDL based protocol verification and validation, SDL based interoperability testing of CSMA/CD and CSMA/CA
protocol using Bridge, Scalability testing-Applications.
