Default Re: CAPF Exam Solved Paper

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) was conducted Assistant Commandants (Group A) in the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) viz. Border Security Force (BSF), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) written exam on 26 July -2016

Here are some question for CAPF with answer and explanations:

Chemistry
20. Consider following statements

Statement I : Catalytic hydrogenation is highest when the catalyst remains in the powdered form

Statement II : When a catalyst is in the powdered form, its surface area becomes highest

Answer choices

Both the statements are individually true and Statement II is the correct explanation of Statement I
Both the statements are individually true but Statement II is NOT the correct explanation of Statement I
Statement I is true but Statement II is false
Statement I is false but Statement II is true
Reference – Page 127 class 12 chemistry ncert (part 1) Heterogeneous catalysis & 5.3 Intex Question in same page. So Answer should be A

21. Which one of the following statements regarding baking powder is NOT correct ?

It is a mixture
It forms bubbles in a wet mixture
It can be used instead of using yeast
It does not contain sodium bicarbonate
Explantion- Page 31 of class 10 Science NCERT .It says chemical name of baking soda is sodium hydrogencarbonate NaHCo3 . This NaHCo3 is also called as sodium bicarbonate. So statement d is wrong. Correct answer is D.

26. Match List-I with List-II and select the correct answer using the code given below the Lists :

List-I (Compound) List-II (Colour)
A.Urea 1.Blue
B.Hydrous copper sulphate 2.White
C.Lead sulphide 3.Pinkish purple
D.Potassium permanganate 4.Black
Answer choices:

Code A B C D
(a) 2 1 4 3
(b) 2 4 1 3
(c) 3 4 1 2
(d) 3 1 4 2
Reference –

NCERT Class 12 Part 1, Chapter 7 Page no 170, Table 8.8 of Page 222, and page 226 .

27.The radius of a hydrogen atom is 10-10 m. Number of hydrogen atoms to have a length of one nanometer is:

6.023 * 10^-23
10
5
100
Explanation-

2*10 ^-10 meter is the diameter of one hydrogen atom

So 1 meter is the diameter of (1/2* 10^-10) hydrogen atoms

So 10^-9 meter will have the diameter of = (1/ 2*10^-10) *10^-9 = (1/2)10^10*10^-9= 5

So answer is C.

38. Which one of the following statements is correct ?

Iron sulphate and copper sulphate crystals have same number of water of crystallization
Iron sulphate and zinc sulphate crystals have same number of water of crystallization
Zinc sulphate and copper sulphate crystals have same number of water of crystallization
Iron sulphate, copper sulphate and zinc sulphate crystals each have same number of water of crystallization
NCERT Class 10 Science, Page 32

Water of crystallisation is the fixed number of water molecules present in one formula unit of a salt.

Copper sulphate CuSO4.5H2O has 5 water molecules in one unit of salt, says same NCERT page. and we can see in the chemical formula, it has 5 H2O
Zinc sulphate (ZnSO4.7H2O) from formula, it has 7 number of water of crystallization.
Iron sulphate (FeSO4.7H2O) from formula, it has 7 number of water of crystallization. this google book confirms
That means Zinc and Iron sulphate have same no. of water of crystallization, therefore B is the correct answer.

81. The hydrogen atoms present in acetylene molecule are:

acidic
basic
both acidic and basic
neutral
This google book says “Due to this hydrogen atom, acetylene is acidic in nature”. Hence answer “A”

82. Which one of the following compounds is NOT considered an acid ?

BF3
A1C13
NH3
C6H2OH
Reference- Page 172 class 12 chemistry ncert (part 1) , example 7.4

86. Movement of outer electrons in the inner orbits of an atom produces :

alpha-ray
beta-ray
y-ray
x-ray
This google book says X-ray produced by this movement (although I’m not very sure if interpretation is right.) so for the moment, answer is “X-ray”

87. y-ray consists of :

meson particles
neutrino particles
Higg’s boson
electromagnetic waves
Reference – Page 270 Physics class 12th NCERT (Part 1)

88. The heaviest element known up till January 2015 has the atomic number :

117
118
119
120

96. Heavy water of an atomic reactor is :
deionised water
an oxide of heavier isotope of oxygen
a mixture of ice and water
an oxide of heavier isotope of hydrogen
Explanation- Page 52 Science NCERT class 9 Or Page 286 NCERT chemistry 11, Part 2 Deuterium is the isotopes of hydrogen and heavy water is D2O

97. In a radioactive decay of a nucleus, an electron is also emitted. This may happen due to the fact that :

electrons are present inside a nucleus
an electron is created at the time of conversion of a neutron into proton
an electron is created at the time of conversion of a proton into a neutron
electrons need to be emitted for conservation of momentum
This google book says: radioactive decay in which an electron is ejected from the nucleus to convert a neutron into a proton, is called “Beta emission”. so Answer “B”. NCERT Class 12 Physics chapter 13 nuclei suggest similar.

Biology
32. Match List-I with List-II and select the correct answer using the code given below the Lists :

List-I (Element) List-II (Application)
A.Isotope of Uranium 1.Treatment of Cancer
B.Isotope of Cobalt 2.Treatment of goiter
C.Isotope of Iodine 3.Treatment of secondary cancer
D.Isotope of Radium 4.Nuclear fuel
Answer choices:

Code A B C D
(a) 3 2 1 4
(b) 4 2 1 3
(c) 4 1 2 3
(d) 3 1 2 4
Reference- Page 503 of Lucent (3rd line) , so cobalt isotope is used for treatment of cancer So, B1.

A4B1, by elimination, we are left with answer “C”

33. Hemocyanin is an oxygen-transport metalloprotein present in some invertebrate animals. This protein contains:

one copper atom
two copper atoms
one iron atom
one magnesium atom

Answer “B”. But who has time to prepare such minute detail *Bang head*.

39. Match List I with List II and select the correct answer using the code given below the Lists :

List-I (Scientist) List-II (Area of study)
A. J.D. Watson 1. Microbiology
B.Louis Pasteur 2. Taxonomy
C.Carl Linnaeus 3. Molecular Biology
D.Charles Darwin 4. Evolution
Answer choices:

Code A B C D
(a) 4 2 1 3
(b) 4 1 2 3
(c) 3 1 2 4
(d) 3 2 1 4

Reference – britannica #1, britannica #2, britannica #3, Class 8 NCERT Science Page 20, Charles Darwin- Page 149 Class 10th NCERT Science. So answer should be C.
